Business Motivation

The Standish Group estimates that businesses in the United States alone spent around $382 billion on software development in 2003 and wasted $82 billion due to failures and cancellations. 2008 figures will be much higher, especially on the global front.

The main problem is the code-centric nature of software development, especially when starting from scratch - it is slow, expensive, terribly inefficient and horribly error prone.

Deploying a simple application on the web has become dreadfully complex. Today's development environments boast an exhaustive list - Java, Java Beans, Java Scripts, JSF, JSP, AJAX, Struts, Hibernate, Ruby, Ruby-On-Rails, .NET, VB, C#, ASP and the list goes on.

It is unreasonable to expect any individual or even a team of individuals to know all this technology. BriteWorks objective is to shield developers from this complexity, yet to allow them to take advantage of most.

Frameworks such as the ones mentioned above are limited beyond GUI development. All the work in developing an actual application and implementing the necessary business logic needs to be coded by hand in Java, C# or other languages. Most frameworks provide skeletal code and some generate code that has to be modified by hand.

The assumption with all such frameworks is that the developer needs to know, understand and be proficient in coding and hence we are back to the same problem - coding.

Not only are systems becoming more complex, skilled manpower is also becoming scarce. In Malaysia (and the whole region) there is a shortage of programmers and the problem is being exacerbated by the fact that since 2000 and the Dotcom bust, less students are opting for IT courses.

With BriteWorks, we address this problem by eliminating the need to know programming altogether. You start with an application that is virtually complete and you focus on specifying the business rules, the GUI and the user interactions.

Applications take hours/days/weeks to develop rather than months and years - at least 20 times faster than conventional methods.

70% of IT budgets are spent on support and maintenance as opposed to new software development. With BriteWorks, maintenance and development are one and the same. Changes are highly localised and so a change does not stop the entire application from working as is sometimes the case with conventional methods.

Many of BriteSoft™'s employees were familiar with CASE tools, where code was generated instead of written. With the fall of CASE, good and bad aspects were all thrown out in favour of handcrafting code in a more complex environment. These same employees also followed this trend and coded in Java, C++ and CORBA. It was at this juncture that the Founder of BriteSoft™ felt that there must be an easier, quicker way to develop applications. Hence, in 2002, BriteSoft was born with the objective of addressing this problem.

The Gartner Group has stated that by 2020 most applications will be built in the manner outlined by BriteWorks™, i.e. less or no coding.

BriteSoft™ delivers on that vision today and is poised to revolutionize application development.
